'Jha is the right scholar and economist to take readers through the development of the Indian economy. Readers will be in good hands.'- Edmund Phelps , Columbia University, USA, and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics'This is perhaps the best and most scholarly contribution to understanding the Indian Economy and Society. Its rich historical perspective and a profound understanding of how India has evolved into a major economic power set standards of scholarship and analytical rigour that will be hard to surpass".- Raghav Gaiha , University of Manchester, UK'Linking of economy and society is increasingly recognised as essential for addressing policy challenges by the current phase of globalisation. As such this study should be valuable not just for those studying India, but also for those interested in global developments.'- Mukul Asher , National University of Singapore, Singapore'This book is a tour-de-force review of the fundamental topics on the Indian political economy and society that are relevant for any committed social scientist to be aware of.'- Sumit K. Majumdar , University of Texas at Dallas, USA'Over the years, I have benefited from reading the works of Professor Jha, and from teaching from them. I enthusiastically recommend these two volumes.'- Raaj Kumar Sah , University of Chicago, USA This two-volume work provides an account of how India has been meeting its myriad of economic, political and social challenges and how things are expected to evolve in the future. Despite enormous challenges at the time of independence, India chose to address them within a secular, liberal, democratic framework, which guaranteed several fundamental rights. Challenges included intense mass poverty and hunger, very poor literacy and educational abilities of the population, the task of uniting a country with scores of languages and ethnicities ruled by different entities for decades and persistent threats of external aggression, to name just a few. Over time, incomes and opportunities have expanded enormously and India has regained her self-confidence as a nation. In this second volume, Jha examines the performance and prospects for India's agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors. In addition, India's links with the external world through international trade, investment, migration and remittances are discussed, as well as gender issues, inter-community relations and India's future prospects.

The Aesthetics of Democracy

This book offers an original and interdisciplinary interpretation of the relation between aesthetics and modern liberal democracy, uniting the fields of art theory with the democratic political philosophy and modern liberal economic theory. The central argument of the books offers an explanation of the theoretical limitations of the contemporary discourse concerning "political art," while at the same time illustrating historically how the European and American discourse of modern democracy and political economy developed an explicit stance against the conflation of art and politics. Exposing the unstated presuppositions about our modern liberal democracy, Craig Carson opens a new field of inquiry concerning the role of art, media, and televisual "theater" central to modern politics.

Obama's Rhetoric and the Myth of Virtuous Power

Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: "-", University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Institut für Kultur und Medien), language: English, abstract: An initial reaction to the appearance of Barack Obama on the American political stage has been one oscillating between reluctant approval, enthusiastic appreciation and mistrusting rejection. The chance of the first African-American president brought about much support for Obama, as well as critique claiming that he would just be a tool of liberal forces to put forth a politically correct agenda. The problem of race, very early on in the presidential primaries and later in the general election, was oddly unspoken of, yet permanently present.[...]Two speeches of Barack Obama will serve as a foundation for analysis. One is "A More Perfect Union", given in March 2008 in the height of the Democratic primary campaign. It deals with the race problematic in America. The other one is his Inaugural Address from January 2009 which of course has a much more celebratory tone. Both speeches center around the question of how the American society does deal and should deal with times of economical distress though their topical focus is an entirely different one. However, the effect both aim for, and to a large degree surely achieve, is a uniting one. Uniting different racial groups, uniting political opponents, uniting most of the divisive tendencies of society to reclaim the American Dream.

As one of the oldest fraternal orders, Freemasonry exerts a powerful influence on its membership through its symbolism, architecture and ritual, based on the tenets of mutual respect and tolerance towards all human beings. Such principles helped in creating a body of practices and institutions as early as the eighteenth century which two hundred years later were conceptualized as global civil society. The allegations of anti-Masons and conspiracy theorists offer a continuous account of Masonry s influence on the political scene since its modern founding in 1717 Great Britain. Even though they paint a distorted view of reality, such theories do challenge the novelty of global civil society, as well as its claim of being an inclusive and growing sector uniting people all over the world. Masonic influence in the social world reflects the liberal worldview where the nation-state and power structures are in pursuit of human progress, or profit. The symbolism in Masonry, however, carries a message of republican ideals. It creates spaces of meaning where the contradictions between the ideals and the structures of inequality and elitism can be resolved.

The aim was to create a single conservative party that could defeat the governing Liberal Party. The goal of uniting the right was accomplished in December 2003 with the formation of the Conservative Party of Canada.
