The Liberal Spirit and Anti-Liberal Discourse o...

Not many cardinals get to be declared saints, and even rarer is one who is known for his controversial ideas and interpretation of doctrinal faith both within and outside the church. John Henry Newman (1801-1890), however, beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010, was no ordinary churchman. Raised an Anglican and a leading member of the Oxford Movement in his younger days, he converted to Catholicism and, through prolific writing and polemics, established an intellectual and spiritual influence far beyond the placid, pastoral domain of the papacy. This book seeks to settle the historical question of Newman as anti-liberal or liberal, and to shed theological light on his liberal spirit and anti-liberal discourse, in order to provide fresh insights into the issue of religious pluralism. In particular, the author examines Newman's perception of the danger of the liberal spirit of his time and his possession of another kind of liberal spirit that made him so original, bold and prophetic.

Montesquieu's Political Economy

This book provides an introductory survey of Montesquieu's economic ideas and a fresh examination of the longstanding controversy over the meaning and purpose of Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws . No one doubts that Montesquieu helped to formulate the core liberal ideals at the heart of the development of liberal republican traditions on both the European and American continents. Yet, questions remain about Montesquieu's political intentions. In particular, the view of Montesquieu as a conscious proponent of commercial modernity has come under increasing scrutiny. While not ignoring recent scholarly challenges, Bibby moves the debate forward by uncovering the many hidden connections between commerce, liberty, and religion in The Spirit of the Laws . A failure to make these connections, Bibby argues, has led to significant interpretative errors. This book attempts to eliminate one source of the confusion which continues to cloud Montesquieu's political philosophy in obscurity.

Harry Emerson Fosdick and J. Gresham Machen

Throughout the history of the church and the Scriptures, it seems that people are always trying to accommodate the eternal truths of God s Word to the Spirit of the Age. Following World War I, Harry Emerson Fosdick popularized modern liberalism in America. J. Gresham Machen led the Evangelical response, arguing for the centrality of doctrine in defining Christianity. The battle between these two men would shape American Christianity in the twentieth century. This book examines the apologetic and philosophical concerns behind the modern liberal movement and the strengths and weaknesses of the Evangelical position, paying particular attention to the lasting legacy of Machen. Since the same questions that fueled the modern liberal movement continue to circulate and influence generations of believers and non-believers, it seems that the church must be more proactive in addressing these questions and the doubts that undergird them.
