The roots of the Liberal Arts in Antiquity

In autumn 2012, University College Freiburg introduced 'Liberal Arts and Sciences' (LAS), the first four-year undergraduate program of its kind at a German university. Inspired by Liberal Arts programs of universities in the United States and the Netherlands, this undergraduate curriculum is based on the ancient concept of the Seven Liberal Arts, and is intended to serve as preparatory study for later specialization. Although the traditional canon of Seven Liberal Arts, consisting of three language sciences and four natural sciences, only became fixed in the Middle Ages, its roots can be traced into Classical Antiquity. This volume is conceived as a sourcebook of Greek and Latin texts with English translations and is addressed to any reader interested in the history of the Seven Liberal Arts. Two essays, 'Körper und Geist in der Erziehung des freien griechischen Mannes' by Prof. Hans-Joachim Gehrke, and 'Der Streit um die richtige Bildung in Rom' by Prof. Bernhard Zimmermann, expand upon the subject of the volume.

The book is a preliminary attempt to go the roots of communal tension which is still there in the Punjab. Besides belonging to the past history, the roots are also concerned with ideology, classes and cultural adjustment to the west. We can understand the dilemma of society and concomitant tension in the context of what happened during the late nineteenth century Punjab. The cultural adjustment of the Indians to the west appears to be ambivalent. On the one hand it projects the idea of human equality nationalism and liberal institutions. On the other hand, it led to separatist politics and fanatical revivalism.

In this volume, the views of the founder of the Austrian School of economics, Carl Menger (1840-1921), are clarified by various specialists (Austrian and French, economists and philosophers) with the common purpose to understand Menger at his roots. All themes (including his views on liberal creeds, on methodology and theory) surge from a common source: the archives that make up Menger’s Nachlass (his private library located in Japan and his notebooks in the USA). This volume is intended for all those who want to read Menger in his texts.

Can open society survive? Is Europe disintegrating? How to overcome the economic crisis? Will Europeans feel secure again?Counter Revolution is a bold attempt to make sense of the extraordinary events taking place in Europe today. It examines the counter-revolution developing in Europe, exploring its roots and implications. The book takes the form of a series of heartfelt letters to the late European guru Ralf Dahrendorf. Several months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Dahrendorf wrote a book fashioned on Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. Like Burke, he chose to put his analysis in the form of a letter, reflecting on the implications of the turbulent period around 1989. Thirty years' later, and faced with an equally turbulent period, Jan Zielonka asks: what next? This is not a book on populism, however: it is a book about liberalism. Populism has become a favourite topic within liberal circles and few have exposed populist deceptions and dangers better than liberal writers. Yet, liberals have shown themselves better at finger-pointing than at self-reflection. This book addresses the imbalance, it is a self-critical book by a life-time liberal.Counter-Revolution suggests that Europe and its liberal project need to be reinvented and recreated. There is no simple way back. Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel will not produce wonders. Europe failed to adjust to enormous geopolitical, economic, and technological changes that swept the continent over the past three decades. European models of democracy, capitalism, and integration are not in sync with new complex networks of cities, bankers, terrorists, or migrants. Liberal valuesthat made Europe thrive for many decades have been betrayed. The escalation of emotions, myths, and ordinary lies left little space for reason, deliberation, and conciliation. This book examines these different aspects, proposing a way out of the labyrinth.

Wilsonianism

In Wilsonianism , American foreign relations specialist Lloyd E. Ambrosius has compiled his published and unpublished essays on Woodrow Wilson's liberal ideology and statecraft during and after World War I. Although the president failed in his pursuit of a new world order, his legacy of Wilsonianism - the principles of national self-determination, economic globalization, collective security, and progressive historicism - continued to shape U.S. foreign relations throughout the American Century. Ambrosius examines the American roots of Wilson's liberal internationalism, the dilemmas and contradictions in his principles, and the problematic consequences of U.S. efforts to implement Wilsonian ideals without fully appreciating the world's cultural pluralism as well as its economic and political interdependence. Offering a pluralist variant of the realist tradition in international relations, Ambrosius stresses the centrality of power, but maintains that culture and political economy as well as military strength determine the balance of power within and among nations or empires. Consequently, he concludes, making the world safe for democracy has been more problematic in practice, both at home and abroad, than proclaiming Wilsonian principles in the abstract.
