Called by H.L. Mencken, "one of the few economists in history who could really write," Henry Hazlitt achieved lasting fame for his brilliant but concise work. In it, he explains basic truths about economics and the economic fallacies responsible for unemployment, inflation, high taxes, and recession. Covering considerable ground, Hazlitt illustrates the destructive effects of taxes, rent and price controls, inflation, trade restrictions, and minimum wage laws. And, he writes about key classical liberal thinkers like John Locke, Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, John Stuart Mill, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Herbert Spencer. 1. Language: English. Lord Stonehouse, to show his loyalty to Parliament, has named Tom as his successor. But Lord Stonehouse's son, Richard, is also Tom's estranged father and a fervent royalist. If the king reaches a settlement with Parliament Richard will inherit... Parliament itself is deeply divided, with those demanding a strict Puritan regime pitted against more liberal independents like Cromwell. King Charles, under house arrest, tries to exploit the divisions between them. When Richard arrives from France with a commission from the queen to snatch the king from Parliamentary hands, he and Tom are set on a collision course. Caught between his love for his wife, Anne, and their young son and his loyalty to the new regime, Tom must struggle to save both his family and the estate. Cromwell's Blessing is the dramatic story of Tom Neave's fight for the principles he holds so dear - democracy, freedom and honour - and his young family, set against the backdrop of the violent conflict of the English Civil War. 1. Humor is the most celebrated of all Jewish responses to modernity. In this book, Ruth Wisse evokes and applauds the genius of spontaneous Jewish joking - as well as the brilliance of comic masterworks by writers like Heinrich Heine, Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Babel, S. Y. Agnon, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Philip Roth. At the same time, Wisse draws attention to the precarious conditions that call Jewish humor into being - and the price it may exact from its practitioners and audience. Wisse broadly traces modern Jewish humor around the world, teasing out its implications as she explores memorable and telling examples from German, Yiddish, English, Russian, and Hebrew. Among other topics, the book looks at how Jewish humor channeled Jewish learning and wordsmanship into new avenues of creativity, brought relief to liberal non-Jews in repressive societies, and enriched popular culture in the United States. Even as it invites listeners to consider the pleasures and profits of Jewish humor, the book asks difficult but fascinating questions: Can the excess and extreme self-ridicule of Jewish humor go too far and backfire in the process? And is "leave 'em laughing" the wisest motto for a people that others have intended to sweep off the stage of history? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dina Pearlman. Author of the New York Times best seller Useful Idiots and popular columnist Mona Charen takes a close, reasoned look at the aggressive feminist agenda undermining the success and happiness of men and women across the country. In this smart, deeply necessary critique, Mona Charen unpacks the ways feminism fails us at home, in the workplace, and in our personal relationships - by promising that we can have it all, do it all, and be it all. Here, she upends the feminist agenda and the liberal conversation surrounding women's issues by asking tough and crucial questions, such as: Did women's full equality require the total destruction of the nuclear family? Did it require a sexual revolution that would dismantle traditions of modesty, courtship, and fidelity that had characterized relations between the sexes for centuries? Did it cause the broken dating culture and the rape crisis on our college campuses? Did it require war between the sexes that would deem men the "enemy" of women? Have the strides of feminism made women happier in their home and work life. (The answer is no.) Sex Matters tracks the price we have paid for denying sex differences and stoking the war of the sexes - family breakdown, declining female happiness, aimlessness among men, and increasing inequality. Marshaling copious social science research as well as her own experience as a professional as well as a wife and mother, Mona Charen calls for a sexual ceasefire for the sake of women, men, and children. 1. Editorial cartoonists, like many journalists, writers, and intellectuals, in Turkey faced various obstacles after the 1980 military intervention. Restrictions on their professional lives came in two different ways. For the editorial cartoonists who work for a mainstream newspaper, the monopolization as a consequence of liberal economy and non-existence of anti-trust laws became more threatening than the governmental taboos such as the Kurdish dispute in the 1990s. By tackling the Kurdish issue, and by often taking sides in favor of Kurdish people or sympathizing with their cause, these editorial cartoonists easily became the target of government oppression. Their sharp criticism of Turkey s human rights violations, the perpetual civil war taking place in the southeastern part of Anatolia, or any topic other than the official history came with a heavy price. This study highlights the situation of the Turkish editorial cartoonists, who have been thus far ignored and mostly left in the dark, by emphasizing the delicate issues and taboos in the two decades following the 1980 military coup. It also sheds a light on the rapid transformation of the Turkish press.
Agriculture is the backbone of Nepal having its one-third share in GDP and employs two-third population. Nepal is adopting most liberal trade policies among South Asian countries but facing decade long trade stress in lieu of that almost one-third population living in two-third of districts are food deficit. This study has been quantifying impacts of trade liberalization by using extended form of multi-market model for rice, wheat, maize and potato markets in 2010. Altogether ten policy scenarios under five broad categories are simulated and respective results are compared with base period. Impact indicators of food self-sufficiency, economic surplus, GDP growth, food trade balance, self-reliance, and government revenue are expected to be far better in partial policy reforms even world price increases, supply shock happens or global food demand increases but net-food consumption and net-welfare improvement are far better under moderate to full trade policy reforms. Study recommends tetra-track policies for reducing food insecurity trade stress in the WTO regime.
Speciality corns viz. sweetcorn, popcorn, babycorn, high oilcorn etc. assume tremendous market potential not only in India but in international market as well. Among the different types of maize, popcorn [Zea mays L. var. everta (Sturtev.) L.H. Bailey] is one of the major ones, which is popular as a snack food in many parts of world. Its kernels are composed of hard starch, when heated, swell and burst. Because of low sugar, fat and calories, it is good food for health. Groundnut-wheat is the pre-dominant cropping system of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. High input cost and labour requirement along with low market price are major constraints in wheat cultivation. Being a C4 plant suited better under the climate change condition and photo-insensitive crop, popcorn seems to be the best alternate crop in place of wheat, which needs to be tested under south Saurashtra agro-climatic conditions. Weed infestation is a major problem in rabi popcorn. Wider row spacing and liberal use of irrigation and fertilizers lead to more growth of weeds. So it is imperative to evolve weed management practice.
