For much of American history, evangelicalism was aligned with progressive political causes. nineteenth-century evangelicals fought for the abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, and public education. But contemporary conservative activists have defaulted on this majestic legacy, embracing instead an agenda virtually indistinguishable from the Republican Party platform. Abortion, gay marriage, public education: the Religious Right is fighting, and winning, some of the most important political battles of the twenty-first century. How has evangelical Christianity become so entrenched in partisan politics? Randall Balmer is both an evangelical Christian and a historian of American religion. Struggling to reconcile the contemporary state of evangelical faith in America with its proud tradition of progressivism, Balmer has headed to the frontlines of some of the most powerful and controversial organizations tied to the Religious Right. Deftly combining ethnographic research, theological reflections, and historical context, Balmer laments the trivialization of Christianity, and offers a rallying cry for liberal Christians to reclaim the noblest traditions of their faith. 1. The Democratic National Convention: The History...

As the oldest political party in the United States, the Democratic Party has been one of the nation’s major political parties for over 150 years, and diverse men and ideas have fallen under its tent since the 19th century. Today the Democrats are generally viewed as proponents of a strong, centralized federal government, and yet the forerunner of the modern party was none other than Thomas Jefferson, the man most associated with states’ rights and limited government. With its Jeffersonian background, the party championed farmers, and Andrew Jackson’s populist era made the Party home to urban workers and new immigrants. Eventually sectional splits weakened the Democrats, and when the fledgling Republican Party took power under Abraham Lincoln in 1861, it ushered in an era in which the Democrats only elected two presidents over a 70-year span. However, Reconstruction ensured that the Democrats maintained an almost unbreakable level of support in the old Confederate states, and they used the Solid South to wield power in Congress for decades. One hundred and fifty years after the Civil War, the Democratic Party’s current voting bloc (strongly reliant on minorities) and their base of power (the Northeast and Midwest) are completely different than the 19th century’s incarnation. Its platform has also been completely revamped. Both of those reversals are byproducts of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society, which continue to be the pillars on which the Democrats’ current platform rests. As the 20th century progressed, so did the Democratic Party, and by 1932, it had switched places with the Republicans and had become the party of liberal politics, beginning with the four term tenure of Franklin Roosevelt and continuing through the Great Society promulgated by Lyndon Johnson. And yet, it left many of the people who should have supported it dissatisfied, as could be seen in the rioting and unrest that surrounded both the 1. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. Social Media and the Post-Truth World Order

This book discusses post-truth not merely as a Western issue, but as a problematic political and cultural condition with global ramifications. By locating the roots of the phenomenon in the trust crisis suffered by liberal democracy and its institutions, the book argues that post-truth serves as a space for ideological conflicts and geopolitical power struggles that are reshaping the world order. The era of post-truth politics is thus here to stay, and its reach is increasingly global: Russian trolls organizing events on social media attended by thousands of unaware American citizens; Turkish pro-government activists amplifying on Twitter conspiracy theories concocted via Internet imageboards by online subcultures in the United States; American and European social media users spreading fictional political narratives in support of the Syrian regime; and Facebook offering a platform for a harassment campaign by Buddhist ultra-nationalists in Myanmar that led to the killing of thousands of Muslims. These are just some of the examples that demonstrate the dangerous effects of the Internet-driven global diffusion of disinformation and misinformation. Grounded on a theoretical framework yet written in an engaging and accessible way, this timely book is a valuable resource for students, researchers, policymakers and citizens concerned with the impact of social media on politics.

Fidel Castro and Che Guevara: The Legends of th...

Fidel Castro is one of the most influential and controversial men of the last 50 years, equally revered and reviled by people across the globe. To the West, Castro has long been one of the prominent faces of Communism, and the main reason Cuba has been ostracized by many liberal democracies, particularly the United States. On the other hand, Castro has been admired by those who despised capitalism, and despite the fact the political platform Castro advocated has been almost universally repudiated and only maintains a weak hold even in Cuba, Castro's Marxist-leaning writings and speeches have influenced other leaders across the globe, from Hugo Chavez to Nelson Mandela. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known to the world as Che, has led two lives. In the first of these lives, the Argentine-born revolutionary was a remarkable and flawed doctor-turned-guerilla who left behind a highly controversial political legacy. In the second, he was - and is - first and foremost an image. Specifically, he is one particular image in which he appears as a wavy-haired, bearded young man with a beret and an intense gaze. The photograph, entitled Guerrillero Heroico and taken on March 5, 1960 by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, is said to be the most reproduced image in the history of photography. Fidel Castro and Che Guevara chronicles the lives, careers, and revolutions Castro and Che were involved in, while analyzing the controversies and legacies they left in their wake. 1. One of our most beloved comedians, the brilliantly witty and outspoken star of The View, hits the most unpopular president ever elected where it hurts - and makes us laugh and cheer - in this hilarious alphabetical guide to everything that's wrong with the "Orange One", Donald Trump. Put down the knife, lock away the gun, lay aside the noose - Joy Behar is here to save you from suicide as she hot walks you through the next four years (two if we are lucky, less if liberal dreams come true). Besides despair, the sane response to the insanity in the White House is laughter. On her hit ABC daytime show The View, Joy has been blunt in her condemnation of the comb-over-in-chief, and her words have electrified and inspired millions in the resistance for whom #notmypresident has become a rallying cry. The Great Gasbag is Joy's answer to the hell that is the Trump Orange House. Structured as an A-Z guide (G is for gold...en shower; P is for Pence and p***y-grabbing; T is for tweets, twits, and twats; etc.), Joy, joined by New York Times best-selling humor author Larry Amoros, offers much-needed doses of levity and humor for everyone determined to #resist. With a major network television profile and a social media audience in the millions, this fearlessly confident star has a powerful platform to entertain Americans of all stripes - from Never Trumpers to fired-up progressives - as she takes on the worst president since...well, since ever. 1. Includes some of Fidel's quotes about Cuba, the revolution, and America. Includes a bibliography of books about Castro and written by him. "Men do not shape destiny. Destiny produces the man for the hour." (Fidel Castro, 1959) Fidel Castro is one of the most influential and controversial men of the last 50 years, equally revered and reviled by people across the globe. To the West Castro has long been one of the prominent faces of Communism and the main reason Cuba has been ostracized by many liberal democracies, particularly the United States. On the other hand, Castro has been admired by those who despised capitalism, and despite the fact the political platform Castro advocated has been almost universally repudiated and maintains only a weak hold even in Cuba, Castro's Marxist-leaning writings and speeches have influenced other leaders across the globe, from Hugo Chavez to Nelson Mandela. Although his health has been poor for several years, and rumors relentlessly abound about his imminent demise, Castro continues to be the face of Cuba for better and worse. But while everybody is at least partially familiar with his leadership of the Cuban Revolution and Cuba itself, far fewer are familiar with Castro's past and the vision he had for himself. Latin American Revolutionaries: The Life and Legacy of Fidel Castro chronicles the life, work, and revolutions Castro was involved in while analyzing the controversies and legacy he left in his wake. You will learn about Fidel like you never have before, in no time at all. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Mort Sahl's America , Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 69min

In Mort Sahl's America, the sophisticated, political satirist exposes the grand follies of the powers that be. He tips his dagger towards liberal or conservative, from Robert Dole to Bill Clinton, from Jesse Jackson to Al Gore, no one is spared. Sahl takes his audience on an incredible trip back to Barbra Streisand's 1992 fundraising extravaganza for then Arkansas Governor, Bill Clinton, relaying Streisand's analysis of each of the party's attendees. He talks of his frustrated relationships with liberated women and shares his thoughts on gay marriage and Catholic priests. As an added bonus, Sahl shares the stage with Senator Eugene McCarthy, whose bid for the 1968 US presidency ran on a platform which opposed the Vietnam War. McCarthy offers wry reflections on Lyndon Johnson's eccentric behavior and shrewd commentary on Robert McNamara. Mort Sahl has been described as one of the greatest political and social satirists of the 20th century. Sahl wrote jokes for President John F. Kennedy and helped host the 1959 Academy Awards. When his face adorned the cover of Time magazine, its headline hailed him as the "patriarch of a new school of comedians." A bootleg copy of one of Sahl's performances is preserved in the Library of Congress as "the first recording of modern stand-up comedy." And it was Mort Sahl who inspired an 18-year-old Woody Allen to become a stand-up comedian. Speaking of Sahl's style in a 2012 interview, Allen said, "It just completely changed the history of comedy, if one could use the cliché, it changed the face of an art form." 1. Language: English.
