With hundreds of millions of people moving into cities, we're wondering what shapes urban cultures. In this hour, Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk talks about how Istanbul shaped his writing. One historian argues that early liberal philosophies from Amsterdam shaped the United States. And we check in on cultural change as Shanghai - already the biggest city in China - grows. Also, with the new round of calls for a "national conversation" about racism, NPR's Michele Norris talks about how difficult those conversations can be - even at home. God doesn't saunter in once for all and settle like a large cat plumping herself into your favorite rocker with an air that says, "Here I am! Now your life is complete!" God dances beyond the threshold and must continually be enticed into our dwelling. I hope these essays remind us all to extend that invitation, clean all the corners and polish the windows, throw wide the door. When acclaimed essayist Nancy Mairs published her spiritual autobiography, Ordinary Time, Kathleen Norris greeted it in the New York Times Book Review as "a remarkable accomplishment", calling Mairs "a relentlessly physical writer, as fiercely committed to her art as to her spiritual development".In A Dynamic God, Mairs returns to the subject of religion and spirituality and gives us a passionately individual audiobook of meditations on a life of engaged faith. Raised Congregationalist in New England, Mairs is a convert to Catholicism. She is also liberal, feminist, and outspokenly activist - and all that in an increasingly conservative church that scorns her brand of progressive iconoclasm.A Dynamic God explores through beautifully written personal essays the question of why and how Mairs became and remains a Catholic ("despite all odds"); what she finds to love in that tradition; and more broadly, as she writes, how she experiences the holy in her life and in the world.Mairs gives a wonderful picture of the community of worship she belongs to in Arizona, the Community of Christ of the Desert. They celebrate mass in each others' homes, and Mairs writes about the energy that flows from "the intimacy of crowding together, the creativity of our liturgy, the surprise and humor that bubble up in our dialogue". In the Latino image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, she finds inspiration for a commitment to social justice, which she writes about in an essay called "Coveting the Saints". There are essays here on sin and ab 1. Language: English. Narrator: Vicki Summers-Christopher. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/rand/006556/bk_rand_006556_sample.mp3. Poland and Germany are neighbouring countries. Nonetheless they are different in two ways: first, in terms of religiosity and the religious outcome and second, in terms of the abortion law. The author will show the different ways of influence, the discussion and the fight of the church for a ban on abortion in both countries in the 1990s. The hypothesis that the church in Poland had more influence than the church in Germany is also connected with the abortion issue. The reason for this hypothesis lies in the different abortion laws in Germany and Poland. Poland as a deeply religious country has a strict abortion law whereas Germany with a lower rate of religiosity has a liberal abortion law. The author will prove this hypothesis with the help of another disputed topic: the theory about secularization. He will use the theory of secularization by Norris and Inglehart to show that the church has more influence in countries with a lower secularization rate than in a country with a high secularization rate. This book is highly recommended to all readers who are interested in the influence of the church on political and the abortion issue.
'Despite flecks of the victim s blood and what looked like part of an eyebrow, one could make out the letters etched in an artistic, painstaking script that formed the killer s message: Hippocrite Great. A perp who can t spell, said Jarvis. So you think it s a student? ' Professor Roland Norris has been murdered in the early morning hours on the grounds of Valkommen University, and the discovery of the crime sets the scene for Thomas Jones new campus mystery. As two more murders rattle the university, St. Paul detectives LeRon Jarvis and Robert Phan increasingly focus on the victims connections to Jack Ramble, professor of literature and chair of the department. Are the crimes motivated by academic rivalries or the university s finances? A frantic golf cart chase down the 10th fairway of the East Oaks Country Club finally reveals all As with Thomas Jones previous academic mystery, 'The Missing Professor,' this book is a parody of the mystery genre and campus life, but with a serious purpose. In 26 entertaining and succinct chapters, the story line raises such issues as the nature of today s college students, faculty roles and responsibilities, mid-career concerns, the purpose of liberal education, racial diversity, micro-aggression, inclusive teaching, technology and learning, politics and the classroom, active learning, the role of sports in higher education, and academic freedom, to name but a few. This book will enliven, and ensure spirited discussion at any orientation, workshop, or faculty development activity.'
