The Liberal Spirit and Anti-Liberal Discourse o...

Not many cardinals get to be declared saints, and even rarer is one who is known for his controversial ideas and interpretation of doctrinal faith both within and outside the church. John Henry Newman (1801-1890), however, beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010, was no ordinary churchman. Raised an Anglican and a leading member of the Oxford Movement in his younger days, he converted to Catholicism and, through prolific writing and polemics, established an intellectual and spiritual influence far beyond the placid, pastoral domain of the papacy. This book seeks to settle the historical question of Newman as anti-liberal or liberal, and to shed theological light on his liberal spirit and anti-liberal discourse, in order to provide fresh insights into the issue of religious pluralism. In particular, the author examines Newman's perception of the danger of the liberal spirit of his time and his possession of another kind of liberal spirit that made him so original, bold and prophetic.

The Vocation of Sara Coleridge

This book presents a fundamental reassessment of Sara Coleridge. It examines her achievements as an author in the public sphere, and celebrates her interventions in what was a masculine genre of religious polemics. Sara Coleridge the religious author was the peer of such major figures as John Henry Newman and F. D. Maurice, and recognized as such by contemporaries. Her strategic negotiations with conventions of gender and authorship were subtle and successful. In this rediscovery of Sara Coleridge the author revises perspectives upon her literary relationship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Far from sacrificing her opportunities in service of her father's memory, her rationale is to exploit his metaphysics in original religious writings that engage with urgent controversies of her own times. Sara Coleridge critiques the Oxford theology of Newman and his colleagues for authoritarian and elitist tendencies, and for creating a negative culture in religious discourse. In response, she experiments with methodologies of collaborative, dialogic exchange, in which form as much as content will promote liberal, inclusive and productive encounters. She develops this agenda in her major religious work, the unpublished Dialogues on Regeneration (1850-51), which this book examines in its penultimate chapter.

Trollope and the Church

Early and modern critics have noted that Anthony Trollope (1815-1882), who wrote extensively on the Church of England, never clearly takes sides on such issues as Church reform or clerical feuds. This book shows that the author's apparent ambiguity is in fact superficial and that a careful examination of his numerous novels, essays, articles and letters reveals that, as a Liberal, he severely condemned clerical abuses and supported a reform of the Church. He did, however, regard some reformers' methods as excessive. Moreover, critics often disagree on Trollope's type of Churchmanship. Although he clearly despised Evangelicals, he also satirized the wordliness of High Churchmen, but deeply admired Newman and the Tractarians. Ultimately, a chronological study of Trollope's works reveals that from the 1860's onwards, as he grew increasingly sensitive to religious liberalism, he started to support the Broad Church. The study will be especially useful to students of British literature, culture and religious history.
