Nationalist Ideologies in Syria: 1970-2000 endeavours to explore the oscillation between different identities and different nationalist ideologies during Hafez Al Assad era in Syria. An exploration of the nationalist ideologies of that era, which are Arab nationalism, Greater Syrian nationalism, Pan-Islamic nationalism, gives us the clues of this oscillation but in a limited sense. In order to grasp the full picture, a fourth category is necessary: "liberal nationalism". The insights of Syrian politically relevant elites exemplify and explain the significance of this fourth category.

National Identity and Cultural Rights

This book is an attempt to explain and assess the liberal nationalist view on the problems of the legitimacy of nationalism and cultural rights. I want to look at some normative theories over the past fifteen years that evaluate nationalism according to the liberal principles. By considering the alleged conflict between the minority nation-building and the majority nation-building in multination countries, I will examine two models for resolving this conflict: Multinational Federalism and Transnational Federalism . I will argue that, though most liberal nationalists support the former model, they fail to provide a convincing normative ground for justifying Multinational Federalism and stopping national minorities from secession. The liberal nationalists' arguments for necessity of nationalism, ironically, undermine their own claim about normative importance of Multinational Federalism in comparison to Transnational Federalism. This is what I call the paradox of liberal nationalism .

Nordic Nationalism and Right-Wing Populist Poli...

Based on a constructivist approach, this book offers a comparative analysis into the causes of nationalist populist politics in each of the five Nordic independent nation states. Behind the social liberal façade of the economically successful, welfare-orientated Nordic states, right-wing populism has found support in the region. Such parties emerged first in Denmark and Norway in the 1970s, before becoming prominent in Sweden and Finland after the turn of the millennium and in Iceland in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008, when populist parties surged throughout the Nordics. The author traces these Nationalist trails of thoughts back to the National Socialistic movements of the 1920s and 1930s (the respective Nordic version Nazi parties) and before, to the birth of the Nordic nation states in the nineteenth century following the failure of integration. Since then, as the book argues, separate nationalisms have grown strong in each of the countries. This study will appeal to students and scholars as well as wider audiences interested in European Politics, Nordic Politics, Nationalism, and Populism.

Freemasonry in Russian eyes
50,40 € *

There are quite a number of works where authors want to understand what Freemasonry is and offer different interpretations of this theme. In this book the author, considering the Russian historiography on the eighteenth-century Masonic issue from the beginning to the middle of the twentieth century as an example, focuses, mostly, on the works of authors of liberal and nationalist-monarchist tendencies in the Russian historiography which most vividly represent both viewpoints on eighteenth-century Russian Freemasonry. This study considers Catherine II's reign as a context. In this framework it identifies the particular aims of the representatives of liberal and nationalist-monarchist views in using different interpretations of the history of Russian Freemasonry and the activity of Novikov's circle. In the same way it analyzes the range of questions that the representatives of different tendencies posed in their works. These authors, built their hypothesis on the Masonic issue and expressed their points of view, to a certain extent, influenced the public opinion of the Russian society. The study should be useful for anyone who is interested in studying of Freemasonry.

Culture and Hegemony in the Colonial Middle East

This work is a study of the nature and origin of nationality and modern social ideals in the Middle East, particularly Egypt, in the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Bringing together writings on political and social reform with literary works, Noorani challenges dominant assumptions about the emergence of modernity. It shows that while nationalist, liberal, and democratic ideals emerged in the Middle East under European influence, these ideals were nevertheless created out of existing cultural values by reformers and intellectuals. The central element of this process, the book argues, was the transformation of virtue into nationality.
