Based on the DC character, Kara Zor-El (series star MELISSA BENOIST) decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster parents, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers (guest stars DEAN CAIN and HELEN SLATER), Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (series star CHYLER LEIGH), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman (TYLER HOECHLIN) in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later, Kara was living a normal life in National City and still concealing her powers, when a plane crash threatened Alex's life and Kara took to the sky to rescue her. In the aftermath, Kara decided she could no longer sit on the sidelines and came out as Supergirl. She now balances her job as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media, alongside her famous friend and Editor in Chief, James Olsen (series star MEHCAD BROOKS) with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization run by her sister Alex. At the DEO, Kara also gets help from her friends, J'onn J'onzz (series star DAVID HAREWOOD), the Martian Manhunter, Brainac-5 (new series regular JESSE RATH), and Lena Luthor (series regular KATIE McGRATH), who doesn't know Supergirl's true identity is that of her best friend Kara Danvers. In season four, Supergirl is facing a bigger threat than she's ever faced before – a new wave of anti-alien sentiment, spreading across National City that's fomented by Agent Liberty (new series regular SAM WITWER). As Kara mentors a new reporter at CatCo, Nia Nal (new series regular NICOLE MAINES), and tries to use the power of the press to shine a light on the issues threatening to tear the city apart, Supergirl takes to the skies to battle the many villains who rise up in this era of divisiveness. But how does Supergirl battle a movement when she, herself an alien, represents one of the main things people are fearful of?

For the People: American Populist Movements fro...

For the People offers a new interpretation of populist political movements from the Revolution to the eve of the Civil War and roots them in the disconnect between the theory of rule by the people and the reality of rule by elected representatives. Ron Formisano seeks to rescue populist movements from the distortions of contemporary opponents as well as the misunderstandings of later historians. From the Anti-Federalists to the Know-Nothings, Formisano traces the movements chronologically, contextualizing them and demonstrating the progression of ideas and movements. Although American populist movements have typically been categorized as either progressive or reactionary, left-leaning or right-leaning, Formisano argues that most populist movements exhibit liberal and illiberal tendencies simultaneously. Gendered notions of "manhood" are an enduring feature, yet women have been intimately involved in nearly every populist insurgency. By considering these movements together, Formisano identifies commonalities that belie the pattern of historical polarization and bring populist movements from the margins to the core of American history. 1. A SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEARA crucial new guide to one of the most urgent political phenomena of our time: the rise of national populismAcross the West, there is a rising tide of people who feel excluded, alienated from mainstream politics, and increasingly hostile towards minorities, immigrants and neo-liberal economics. Many of these voters are turning to national populist movements, which have begun to change the face of Western liberal democracy, from the United States to France, Austria to the UK.This radical turn, we are told, is a last howl of rage from an aging electorate on the verge of extinction. Their leaders are fascistic and their politics anti-democratic; their existence a side-show to liberal democracy. But this version of events, as Roger Eatwell and Matthew Goodwin show, could not be further from the truth.Written by two of the foremost experts on fascism and the rise of national populism, this lucid and deeply-researched book is a vital guide to our transformed political landscape. Challenging conventional wisdoms, Eatwell and Goodwin make a compelling case for serious, respectful engagement with the supporters and ideas of national populism - not least because it is a tide that won't be stemmed anytime soon.

We are seeing the rise of a populist moment around the world on both the left and the right. Movements like Bernie Sander, Jeremy Corbyn, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have emerged in the midst of the neoliberal crisis. In this book, leading political thinker Chantal Mouffe proposes a left-populist strategy that could bring together the manifold struggles against subordination, oppression and discrimination. In redrawing political frontiers, this "populist moment? points to a "return of the political? after years of postpolitics. This return may open the way for authoritarian solutions?through regimes that weaken liberal-democratic institutions?but it could also lead to a reaffirmation and extension of democratic values.
