Filled with romance and humour, writer, director and star Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) presents Liberal Arts. Featuring star-studded cast including rising star Elizabeth Olsen, Academy Award nominee Richard Jenkins and Emmy Award winner Allison Janney, the film is a heart-warming reminder that sometimes students make the best teachers. The story follows newly single 35-year-old Jesse Fisher. Uninspired by his job and worried that his best days are behind him, no matter how much he buries his head in a book life keeps pulling him back. When his favourite college professor invites him to campus to speak at his retirement dinner, Jesse jumps at the chance. He is prepared for the nostalgia of the dining halls and dorm rooms, the parties and poetry seminars; what he doesn't see coming is Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen) a beautiful, precocious, classical-music-loving student. Zibby awakens scary, exciting, feelings of possibility and connection that Jesse thought he had buried forever.

The Life and Times of David Lloyd George: The C...
Topseller

Philip Madoc gives a career-best performance as one of Britain's most revered, inspiring – and controversial – leaders in this celebrated BBC series. Scripted by BAFTA-winning Elaine Morgan with input from leading historian A.J.P. Taylor – and with famously haunting theme music by Ennio Morricone – The Life and Times of David Lloyd George paints a multifaceted portrait of a political icon who steered Britain through the First World War and its aftermath, and whose pioneering reforms laid the foundations of the welfare state. Brought up in a remote Welsh village, on his way to the top Lloyd George inspires both hysterical adoration and an enmity bordering on bloodlust. A passionate social reformer, his struggle to lift the spectres of poverty and the workhouse provokes the ire of the political establishment, while his indefatigable womanising fills many a gossip column; his political dexterity as the Liberal prime minister of a wartime coalition government, however, will raise him to a new level of power and influence.

Originally banned by the British Board of Film Censors for being a ‘very sordid story in very sordid surroundings’, Love on the Dole, was made in 1941 at a time when social conditions had been radically changed by the Second World War. Set in 1930s Salford, at the height of the Great Depression, young Harry Hardcastle (Geoffrey Hibbert, In Which We Serve) and his sister Sally (Deborah Kerr, The King and I) fall victim to poverty and unemployment, meaning they need to make difficult decisions to survive. Although the film deals with the Depression, mass unemployment, poverty and riots, the film retains positivity by reinforcing the view that Britain and its working classes had survived incredible hardships and would conquer anything which faced them. Peppered with references to a new start and a better future, where “everybody lends a hand” the film is optimistic in its nod to the liberal democracy Britain had retained despite the war. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Walter Greenwood the film was much-praised by critics upon its release. Extras: New High Definition transfer Our Film (Harold French, 1942): Enthralling propaganda film contrasting the Russian home front with the British The Call for Arms (Brian Desmond Hurst, 1940): Government sponsored film about life at a munitions factory Island People (Paul Rotha, 1940): a film surveying of aspects of the British way of life, as seen through French eyes Illustrated booklet with new writing and full film credits

Seijun Suzuki's The Taisho Trilogy
Topseller

HAUNTING, HYPNOTIC, FLAMBOYANT, EROTIC, BIZARRE… SUZUKI! After over a decade in the wilderness following his firing from Nikkatsu for Branded to Kill (1967), maverick director Seijun Suzuki returned with a vengeance with his critically-praised tryptic of cryptic supernatural dramas set during the liberal enlightenment of Japan’s Taisho Era (1912-26). In the multiple Japanese Academy Award-winning Zigeunerweisen (1980), two intellectuals and former colleagues from military academy involve their wives in a series of dangerous sexual games. In Kageroza (1981), a playwright is drawn like a moth to a flame to a mysterious beauty who might be a ghost, while Yumeji (1991) imagines the real-life painter-poet Takehisa Yumeji’s encounter with a beautiful widow with a dark past. Rarely seen outside of Japan, the films in the Taisho Trilogy are considered Suzuki’s masterpieces in his homeland. Presenting a dramatic turn from more his familiar tales of cops, gangsters and unruly youth, these surrealistic psychological puzzles drip with a lush exoticism, distinctively capturing the pandemonium of a bygone age of decadence and excess, when Western ideas, fashions, technologies and art fused into everyday aspect of Japanese life. SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) transfers of all three films Original uncompressed stereo audio Optional English subtitles New introductions to each film by critic Tony Rayns Making-of featurette Vintage interview with Seijun Suzuki Tony Rayns on the Taisho Trilogy, a new appreciation of Suzuki’s trilogy Trailers Reversible sleeve featuring two artwork choices

Lola

Set in a small West German town in 1957, where, with the help of the Economic Miracle, a booming economy is generating a new sense of optimism. In the town brothel, “Villa Fink,” Lola (Barbara Sukowa), a young high-class prostitute with a zest for life, is the star of the show. Her favourite client is the influential developer Schuckert (Mario Adorf), who enjoys spending time at Villa Fink with city officials important to his construction business. When Von Bohm (Armin Mueller-Stahl), an upright, energetic building commissioner with a liberal, social-democratic outlook, arrives in the town, he falls in love with Lola without being aware where she works by night. Although he is shocked when he learns of her true identity, he nevertheless marries her to the satisfaction of all concerned. Ultimately neither Lola, Von Bohm nor Schuckert are really concerned with what has happened in the past or the morality of their decisions – the main thing is that they get what they want. Fassbinder himself said in 1980 that THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN and LOLA “are films about the country as it is today. To understand the present, what a country has and will become, one needs to understand the whole story.” The BRD Trilogy, which also includes VERONIKA VOSS, represents RWF’s attempt to create an overall picture of West Germany at the time, its double moral standards, and the “hazards and dangers” these implied.
