William Galston defends a theory, liberal pluralism, based on three core concepts--value pluralism, political pluralism, and expressive liberty--and explores the implications of this theory for politics. Liberal pluralism helps clarify some of the complexities of real-world political action and points toward a distinctive conception of public philosophy and public policy.

Civil Society and Government

Civil Society and Government brings together an unprecedented array of political, ethical, and religious perspectives to shed light on the complex and much-debated relationship between civil society and the state. Some argue that civil society is a bulwark against government; others see it as an indispensable support for government. Civil society has been portrayed both as a independent of the state and as dependent upon it. This book reveals the extraordinary diversity of views on the subject by examining how civil society has been treated in classical liberalism, liberal egalitarianism, critical theory, feminism, natural law, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Confucianism. The volume draws on the work of eminent scholars to address six questions: In terms of function and consequences, does it matter where the line is drawn between civil society and the state? What is the relationship of civil society to the state? In what contexts and under what conditions should government interact with individuals directly or instead indirectly through communal associations? What are the prerogatives and duties of citizenship, and what is the role of civil society in forming good citizens? How should a society handle the conflicts that sometimes arise between the demands of citizenship and those of membership in the non-governmental associations of civil society? A theoretical introduction by the editors--political theorist Nancy Rosenblum and legal scholar Robert Post--and a conclusion by religious ethicist Richard Miller, tie the book together. In addition to Rosenblum, the contributors are Kenneth Baynes, David Biale, John Coleman, Farhad Kazemi, John Kelsay, William Galston, Will Kymlicka, Tom Palmer, Fred Miller, Susan Moller Okin, Peter Nosco, Henry Rosemont, Steven Scalet, David Schmidtz, William Sullivan, Max Stackhouse, Stephen White, and Noam Zohar.

This edition of Will Kymlicka's best selling critical introduction to contemporary political theory has been fully revised to include many of the most significant developments in Anglo-American political philosophy in the last 11 years, particularly the new debates on political liberalism, deliberative democracy, civic republicanism, nationalism and cultural pluralism. The book now includes two new chapters on citizenship theory and multiculturalism, in addition to updated chapters on utilitarianism, liberal egalitarianism, libertarianism, socialism, communitarianism, and feminism. The many thinkers discussed include G. A. Cohen, Ronald Dworkin, William Galston , Carol Gilligan, R. M. Hare, Catherine Mackinnon, David Miller, Philippe Van Parijs, Susan Okin, Robert Nozick, John Rawls, John Roemer, Michael Sandel, Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, and Iris Young. Extended guides to further reading have been added at the end of each chapter, listing the most important books and articles on each school of thought, as well as relevant journals and websites. Covering some of the most advanced contemporary thinking, Will Kymlicka writes in an engaging, accessible, and non-technical way to ensure the book is suitable for readers approaching these concepts for the first time. This second edition promises to build on the original edition's success as a key text in the teaching of modern political theory.

Culture and Equality

All major western countries today contain groups that differ intheir religious beliefs, customary practices or ideas about theright way in which to live. How should public policy respond tothis diversity? In this important new work, Brian Barry challengesthe currently orthodox answer and develops a powerful restatementof an egalitarian liberalism for the twenty-first century. Until recently it was assumed without much question that culturaldiversity could best be accommodated by leaving cultural minoritiesfree to associate in pursuit of their distinctive ends within thelimits imposed by a common framework of laws. This solution isrejected by an influential school of political theorists, amongwhom some of the best known are William Galston, Will Kymlicka,Bhikhu Parekh, Charles Taylor and Iris Marion Young. According tothem, this 'difference-blind' conception of liberal equality failsto deliver either liberty or equal treatment. In its place, theypropose that the state should 'recognize' group identities, bygranting groups exemptions from certain laws, publicly 'affirming'their value, and by providing them with special privileges orsubsidies. In Culture and Equality, Barry offers an incisive critiqueof these arguments and suggests that theorists of multiculturismtend to misdiagnose the problems of minority groups. Often, theseare not rooted in culture, and multiculturalist policies mayactually stand in the way of universalistic measures that would begenuinely beneficial.
