Queen Elizabeth - A Lifetime of Service

Queen Elizabeth II - the sixth queen regnant and 63rd sovereign of Britain. She can trace her ancestry beyond the Hanoverians, Stuarts, Tudors, Plantagenets and Normans, back to the Saxon kings of the Dark Ages. Her long reign has seen astonishing social changes in Britain and the world. Elizabeth's accession heralded a post-war era of golden promise, but the new Elizabethan age did not quite materialise. Britain moved slowly from wartime ration books to the austerity of the early Cold War years. Then the swinging 60's brought prosperity and new liberal attitudes epitomised by the pop music of the times. It was also the decade when the Queen and Prince Philip completed their family. Prince Charles and Princess Anne - born before the accession - were joined by Prince Andrew in 1960 and Prince Edward in 1964. Princess Margaret married in 1960 and had two children, David and Sarah. The Royal Family looked happy and secure - so much so that they agreed to take part in a ground-breaking television documentary in 1969. Throughout the personal turbulence of her reign, the Queen has remained faultless in her public duties at home and abroad. As constitutional monarch, she has advised twelve Prime Ministers, from Churchill to Cameron. As head of state, she has travelled widely at the request of the British government of the day. Around a third of her overseas visits have been to the Commonwealth. She is Queen in sixteen countries as well as being Head of the Commonwealth, a free association of 53 countries. After the storms of the 1990's and the loss of her mother and sister ten years ago, the Queen will end her reign in happier times. Her grandchildren bring a promise of a restored future for the monarchy, celebrated by the events of the Diamond Jubilee.

This unique intellectual portrait explores the role of ideas in Lincoln’s life. Guelzo presents Lincoln as a serious thinker deeply involved in the problems of 19th-century thought, including those of classical liberalism, the Lockean Enlightenment, Victorian unbelief, and Calvinist spirituality. Lincoln emerges as a philosophical man who appropriates certain religious values without adhering to any religion, who insists on the pre-eminence of self-interest in spite of becoming the Great Emancipator, and who appeals to natural law and natural theology in politics while remaining a classical 19th-century liberal in principle. Based on primary materials from a wide variety of archives, this insightful work sheds light on the intellectual conflicts that led to civil war and that still influence today’s “culture wars.” 1. John Updike's 21st novel, a bildungsroman, follows its hero, Owen Mackenzie, from his birth in the semi-rural Pennsylvania town of Willow to his retirement in the rather geriatric community of Haskells Crossing, Massachusetts. In between these two settlements comes Middle Falls, Connecticut, where Owen, an early computer programmer, founds with a partner, Ed Mervine, the successful firm of E-O Data, which is housed in an old gun factory on the Chunkaunkabaug River. Owen's education (Bildung) is not merely technical but liberal, as the humanity of his three villages, especially that of their female citizens, works to disengage him from his youthful innocence. As a child he early felt an abyss of calamity beneath the sunny surface quotidian, yet also had a dreamlike sense of leading a charmed existence. The women of his life, including his wives, Phyllis and Julia, shed what light they can. At one juncture he reflects, "How lovely she is, naked in the dark! How little men deserve the beauty and mercy of women!" His life as a sexual being merges with the communal shelter of villages: "A village is woven of secrets, of truths better left unstated, of houses with less window than opaque wall." This delightful, witty, passionate novel runs from the Depression era to the early 21st century. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Edward Herrmann. Michael Savage predicted the chaos that is Obama's legacy. Now he tells us whether the destruction can be stopped! The prophetic author of the best-selling Government Zero, Dr. Michael Savage is back with his most urgent and powerful work. Listeners to Dr. Savage's top-rated radio talk show, The Savage Nation, know him to be an articulate and engaged spokesman for traditional American values of borders, language, and culture. Now, after eight divisive years of Barack Obama, Dr. Savage lays out an irrefutable case for how our nation has been undermined by terrorists from without, by anarchists from within, by a president and politicians with contempt for the Constitution and the law, and by a complicit liberal media. With words and topics that are as insightful as they are timely, he makes an ironclad case for the dangers we face from Hillary Clinton and her fellow travelers in the progressive movement. He also explains why Donald Trump may be one of the two best hopes for America's future as we try to regain control of our government, our country, and our national soul. The other hope? As Dr. Savage explains in some of his most heartfelt and passionate words, it is we, the people: the ordinary "Eddies", as he calls them - motivated, roused, and engaged. This book is about much more than an election. It is a veteran commentator and celebrated raconteur providing a blueprint for how to regain our cherished freedoms and our national identity before they are lost forever. 1. Language: English.
