HAUNTING, HYPNOTIC, FLAMBOYANT, EROTIC, BIZARRE… SUZUKI! After over a decade in the wilderness following his firing from Nikkatsu for Branded to Kill (1967), maverick director Seijun Suzuki returned with a vengeance with his critically-praised tryptic of cryptic supernatural dramas set during the liberal enlightenment of Japan’s Taisho Era (1912-26). In the multiple Japanese Academy Award-winning Zigeunerweisen (1980), two intellectuals and former colleagues from military academy involve their wives in a series of dangerous sexual games. In Kageroza (1981), a playwright is drawn like a moth to a flame to a mysterious beauty who might be a ghost, while Yumeji (1991) imagines the real-life painter-poet Takehisa Yumeji’s encounter with a beautiful widow with a dark past. Rarely seen outside of Japan, the films in the Taisho Trilogy are considered Suzuki’s masterpieces in his homeland. Presenting a dramatic turn from more his familiar tales of cops, gangsters and unruly youth, these surrealistic psychological puzzles drip with a lush exoticism, distinctively capturing the pandemonium of a bygone age of decadence and excess, when Western ideas, fashions, technologies and art fused into everyday aspect of Japanese life. SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) transfers of all three films Original uncompressed stereo audio Optional English subtitles New introductions to each film by critic Tony Rayns Making-of featurette Vintage interview with Seijun Suzuki Tony Rayns on the Taisho Trilogy, a new appreciation of Suzuki’s trilogy Trailers Reversible sleeve featuring two artwork choices

The special New Year's Day 2011 edition of BBC Radio 4's 'Beyond Westminster', in which Andrew Rawnsley considers the lessons of history for Britain's coalition government - and its opponents. Conservative and Liberal Democrat ministers are busily advancing their ambitious political and economic agenda - albeit amid parliamentary revolts and embarrassing comments to undercover reporters. Exactly a hundred years ago too, no party had an outright majority at Westminster, and a Liberal government relied on Irish Nationalists and a fledgling Labour Party to enact reform of Parliament, a radical budget and social changes. Lloyd George continued in coalition with the Conservatives after World War One only for peacetime tensions within the government to culminate in the ejection from Downing Street of Britain's last Liberal prime minister, amid mass disaffection with Liberal splits. Can Nick Clegg avoid a similar fate befalling today's Liberal Democrats? Seven months into 'new politics', Andrew Rawnsley explores with historians Juliet Nicolson and Martin Pugh the record of past coalitions. He also discusses with The Rt. Hon. David Davis MP, Simon Hughes MP and Tristram Hunt MP the lessons of the past and questions whether this coalition will re-shape British politics. 1. Language: English. Narrator: uncredited. Political activist William Greene, Wes Boyd, and Eli Pariser of the liberal group Moveon.org on this edition of Fresh Air. Greene is a founder of the conservative group rightmarch.com. According to the group's website, rightmarch.com "is an umbrella website for many conservative organizations." The group has launched media and email campaigns, some of them against Moveon.org. They are planning on sponsoring TV ads criticizing the liberal group. One of the group's members recently released a country song entitled "Hey Hollywood." The song pokes fun at so-called "liberal" actors and country musicians, like Willie Nelson and The Dixie Chicks, who speak out against the war in Iraq. Wes Boyd and Eli Pariser are members of the liberal group Moveon.org. The group was founded by Boyd and Joan Blades, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, in the late 90s as a liberal political force. MoveOn recently sponsored the "Bush in 30 Seconds" ad contest. Some 1500 contestants submitted ads and over 100,000 people voted for them online. Moveon.org is raising money to air the winning ad on TV this week. The organization is even trying to get the ad aired during the Super Bowl. (Broadcast Date: January 21, 2004) 1. Language: English. Journalist Eric Alterman and former CBS reporter and producer Bernard Goldberg on this edition of Fresh Air. Eric Alterman's new book is What Liberal Media? The Truth about Bias and the News. While most critics of the media say reporters are too liberal, Alterman contends the opposite is true, and that the bulk of reporting is quite conservative. Alterman currently writes for The Nation and the Altercation weblog. He's been a contributing editor or writer for Worth, Rolling Stone, Elle, Mother Jones, World Policy Journal and The Sunday Express (London). Bernard Goldberg's bestselling book is Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News. He claims that nearly all the media put a liberal spin on the news. Goldberg worked for CBS for nearly 30 years and won seven Emmy awards. He now works for HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. (Broadcast Date: February 27, 2003) 1. Language: English.
