Alternative Conceptions of Civil Society (eBook...

The idea of civil society has long been central to the Western liberal-democratic tradition, where it has been seen as a crucial site for the development and pursuit of basic liberal values such as individual freedom, social pluralism, and democratic citizenship. This book considers how a host of other ethical traditions define civil society. Unlike most studies of the subject, which focus on a particular region or tradition, it considers a range of ethical traditions rarely addressed in one volume: libertarianism, critical theory, feminism, liberal egalitarianism, natural law, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Confucianism. It considers the extent to which these traditions agree or disagree on how to define civil society's limits and how to evaluate its benefits and harms. A variety of distinguished advocates and interpreters of these traditions present in-depth explorations of how these various traditions think of ethical pluralism within societies, asking how a society should respond to diversity among its members. Together they produce a work rich with original insights on a wide range of subjects about which little has been written to date. An excellent starting point for a comparative ethics of civil society, this book concludes that while the concept of civil society originated in the liberal tradition, it is quickly becoming an important focus for a truly cross-cultural dialogue. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Michael Banner, Hasan Hanafi, Loren E. Lomasky, Richard Madsen, Michael A. Mosher, Michael Pakaluk, Anne Philips, Adam B. Seligman, Suzanne Last Stone, and Michael Walzer.

While this work is presented as “historical fiction”, all the characters represent are real individuals. No names have been changed. Every incident actually occurred and is related as the author, having done extensive research, believes it to have occurred. Even the personalities and attitudes of the characters are portrayed as accurately as possible. No liberties have been taken with established facts. Indeed, the only reasons for labeling this work as “fiction” rather than as “history” are that the author has chosen to tell the story in Bat Masterson’s own voice and has made liberal use of made-up dialogue. 1. Texas is booming. In recent years, the Lone Star State has experienced some of the most rapid growth in the country, both in its economy and in its population. This is thanks to an influx of businesses relocating to Texas to take advantage of all its benefits. But this increase in population has also brought about a shift in the political dialogue within Texas's borders. As more people pour into Texas, they bring with them liberal and socialist ideologies as they try to swing the state from red to blue. These plans for changing policies will suffocate the highly successful capitalist state and its residents, and according to Lt. Col. Allen West (Ret.), allowing these liberal ideals to creep into the legislative branch will be the death of Texas. In Hold Texas, Hold the Nation: Victory or Death, West explains how the longstanding conservative capitalist policies within the state's government have allowed it to flourish over the years, providing hard-to-ignore evidence and allowing his experience in Congress to support his argument. He makes his stand, asserting that Texas must hold fast to its conservative ways and resist succumbing to liberal mindsets, or else cease to prosper, and begin to perish. Texas is a sustaining force for America, truly embodying the founding principles of America: those unalienable individual rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In Texas, it's ''Victory or Death'.' 1. Language: English. Narrator: Allen West. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/166911/bk_acx0_166911_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Pulitzer Prize, Drama, 2013 "Sparkling and combustible," (Bloomberg Businessweek). "Disgraced rubs all kinds of unexpected raw spots with intelligence and humor." (Newsday). "In dialogue that bristles with wit and intelligence, Akhtar puts contemporary attitudes toward religion under a microscope, revealing how tenuous self-image can be for people born into one way of being who have embraced another…. Everyone has been told that politics and religion are two subjects that should be off-limits at social gatherings. But watching these characters rip into these forbidden topics, there's no arguing that they make for ear-tickling good theater." (New York Times). Americans live in an era of increasing political turmoil where tensions are heightened and conflict is the new normal. Having grown up in this environment, millennials know nothing different. Their experiences have driven them toward disillusionment and frustration with the political norm. In sum, they have caught a case of the "bellwether blues". The resulting skepticism has brought out the worst in those who engage in political dialogue, only adding fuel to the fire. In an era where the political world is ablaze with hatred, Bellwether Blues offers a highly effective antidote. Rather than allowing the ends to justify the means, Jonathan Jakubowski encourages conservatives to rethink their approach to reaching the millennial generation. Fight or flight might be the natural response to conflict, but there is a third option for conservatives if they choose: Make friends. This counterintuitive approach is gleaned through the stories of seven millennials in Wood County, Ohio who changed their voting preferences from liberal to conservative. 1. Language: English.
